The North Carolina Legislature has pushed through Rep. Destin Hall’s (R-Caldwell) bill that would call for the Council of State to approve executive orders.
Hall reacted to the news in a Facebook post on June 30.
“North Carolinians deserve confidence that the unprecedented restrictions placed on their families and businesses are the result of bipartisan consensus, not the absolute power of one man,” Hall wrote in his post.
His website goes on to bring more clarity and details for the legislation, which “strengthens the Emergency Management Act requiring approval from a majority of the Council of State for emergency actions taken by Gov. Cooper.".
The bill would call for Cooper to consult with the Council of State for a declaration of emergency that last for more than 30 days. He would also have to speak with the council before declaring any restrictions.
"Governor Cooper continues to enact scattershot executive orders without any regard for checks and balances," House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) said in a statement on Hall's website. "If Gov. Cooper vetoes this bill, it is clear he prioritizes his own power over developing bipartisan solutions to help the people of North Carolina."
