LONG VIEW FIRE DEPARTMENT: Conduct Un-Scientific Experiments on Ventilation/air Flow Possibilites

Airfilter

Long View Fire Department issued the following announcement on Aug. 20.

The A Shift took an opportunity today to conduct un-scientific experiments on ventilation/air flow possibilites.  Based on Underwriters Labratory training video "Positive Pressure Attack" at UL FRSI Sfety Academy, Lt. Knight and ENG Weinrich headed to the training grounds to train and put some ideas to the test.

The building used has a basement (no external windows or vents) and two stories.  It is an older water treatment building, with multiple windows and doors of various sizes on the first and second floors.   The building is over 1400 square foot.

Un-scientific because we only used a piece of paper to confirm air flow direction etc.   We used an electric fan instead of the gas one, and placed it at diffent angles and locations from the first floor door.  Using the paper to check air flow direction we found the optimum placement of the fan and the first floor main entrance.  During our experiments we opened individual windows or doors and noted the air flow direction.  With no way to test volume or velocity, we then selected the furthest upstairs window from the main entrance.

Air volume was sufficient to hold the paper against the screen.   We bagan opening windows and doors to see the differences.  Even with multiple doors and windows open, we determined a properly placed fan was sufficient to create an airflow at the farthest most point in the building.   It wasn't until at least 3 windows and two doors were open that the ariflow diminished sufficiently to allow the paper to drop.   A succesful training day, putting into practical exercise some of the experimental results from the laboratory
