FOIA Request Sent to Burke County Election Department Regarding Upcoming Election Candidates on February 5, 2025

FOIA Request to Burke County Election Department Regarding Information on Candidates for the Upcoming Spring Election on February 5, 2025.

In a bid to ensure transparency and accountability in the upcoming elections, we at Hickory Sun have sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Burke County Election Department. The request, made under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1., seeks comprehensive details about all candidates running in the forthcoming election.

Specifically, we have asked for each candidate's full name, the office they are vying for, and their party affiliation. Additionally, we've requested information about the jurisdiction of each office being contested.

Moreover, our request includes asking for all contact information for each candidate. This encompasses their address, phone number, and email address.

As a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, access to public records is essential for us at Hickory Sun. It allows us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.

We believe that as media professionals involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver for this request. We await a positive response from the Burke County Election Department as we continue our mission of ensuring transparency in local governance.
