On May 16, 2024, Congressman Patrick McHenry (NC-10) delivered remarks at the unveiling of a statue dedicated to North Carolina's beloved figure, the Reverend Billy Graham. The statue is one of two contributions from the state of North Carolina to the Capitol's National Statuary Collection.
Reverend Graham had previously been honored with a Congressional Gold Medal in May 1996 and was laid in honor in the Capitol Rotunda following his death in February 2018. This made him only the fourth private citizen to receive such a distinction.
Congressman McHenry praised Reverend Graham as "a humble servant of God who spread the Gospel to millions around the world." He further stated that visiting Reverend Graham at his home in Montreat was one of the highlights of his service in Congress.
"He is truly one of the finest men North Carolina has ever produced and I can think of no tribute more fitting than for him to represent our state in Statuary Hall. I’m proud to have played a role in making that happen,” said Congressman McHenry.
The congressman has spent years working to ensure that Reverend Graham received this honor. In 2023, he introduced House Concurrent Resolution 18, which aimed to expedite the approval of the statue by forcing action from the Joint Committee on the Library.
