Footballpic

Town of Valdese issued the following announcement on Feb. 5.

The Valdese Tigers pee-wee football team completed a 9-0 undefeated championship season after defeating Oak Hill 32-6 in the Burke County Youth Football Championships this past Saturday at Patton High School.

Remi Treadway led the way for the Tigers with 210 rushing yards and three touchdowns covering 18, 9, and 61 yards along with punching in a 2-point conversion run and passing to Brylan Pearson for another two-point conversion.

Pearson scored the other touchdown for Valdese and ran in two 2-point conversions with recording three tackles for loss on defense.

"I'm just so proud of the whole team, they all improved tremendously from the first week of practice," said Valdese head coach Craig Treadway.

According to Treadway, the Tigers started out with just three kids having playing experience and had to sit out of the East Burke pre-season Jamboree.

"We were simply not ready for any gameplay at that point as we were still teaching positions due to having so many first-year players."

The Tigers started off the season with a 28-12 road win over Glen Alpine and a 28-0 home win over East Burke when Remi Treadway scored all four touchdowns (3 rushing, 1 defense) against the Royals.

A test followed for Valdese on the road against Oak Hill pulling out a 50-48 win over the Bulldogs with Treadway scoring seven touchdowns.

The games that followed saw the Tigers outscore their opposition 202-60 including a 28-0 home win over neighboring rival Drexel.

"We preached effort from day one and I told them repeatedly to give us effort and good things would happen. The kids worked hard and it paid off week after week all the way through the championship game."
