Congressman Pat Harrigan of North Carolina’s 10th District has voted in support of the House amendment to S. 1383, also known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act). The legislation aims to reinforce federal election safeguards by mandating documentary proof of U.S. citizenship for individuals registering to vote in federal elections.
“Election integrity should be the easiest issue in American politics,” said Congressman Harrigan. “Only U.S. citizens should be voting in U.S. elections, and 83% of Americans agree, including 71% of Democrats. This is about basic trust in the system. People expect clear rules, real verification, and accountability. If Democrats decide to oppose this, they’re not standing up for voters, they’re turning their backs on what the overwhelming majority of their own base already supports.”
The SAVE Act proposes updates to the National Voter Registration Act by creating uniform requirements for proving citizenship when registering for federal elections. It specifies which documents are acceptable, enhances verification tools available to election officials, addresses loopholes in current registration processes, and maintains access for eligible voters through provisional ballot protections.
With approval from the House, the amended bill now returns to the Senate for further review before it can proceed to the President.
In a recent election held in 2024, Pat Harrigan secured his seat by defeating Ralph R. Scott, Jr., receiving 57.5% of the vote compared to Scott’s 38.2%.
