Congressman Pat Harrigan of North Carolina’s 10th District held a telephone town hall with over 15,000 constituents amid the ongoing government shutdown. During the event, Harrigan addressed questions and provided updates on federal operations and his legislative efforts.
“North Carolinians deserve honesty about why this shutdown happened and what’s being done to fix it,” said Congressman Harrigan. “The Democrat continuing resolution does nothing to rein in spending or address the long-term drivers of our debt, it just kicks the can while Americans pay the price. We’re working to reach across the aisle, but we’re not going to sign off on more reckless spending with no accountability.”
Harrigan discussed how the shutdown is affecting federal workers and outlined options available for furloughed employees. He also talked about steps Congress is taking to protect essential programs such as Medicare and emphasized that members of Congress should be held to the same standards as others during a shutdown. The Congressman reiterated his focus on fiscal discipline and his commitment to ensuring that families in North Carolina are not disproportionately impacted.
“This town hall wasn’t about politics, it was about being a resource,” Congressman Harrigan continued. “Even though parts of the government are closed, my offices are open, working, and ready to help. If you’re struggling to access benefits, waiting on a payment, or just need clarity about what’s happening, call us. We’re here to help.”
Those who could not participate in the call are encouraged to contact Harrigan’s offices in Washington, D.C., or Hickory for assistance with federal services or sign up for his weekly newsletter at harrigan.house.gov.
In 2024, Pat Harrigan won the general election against Ralph R. Scott, Jr., receiving 57.5% of the vote compared to Scott’s 38.2%.
