Hickory City Schools announced on April 17 that it will offer free summer meals to children ages 18 and under through its Summer Nutrition Program. The initiative aims to provide continued access to healthy meals for local children while school is not in session.

The program addresses the need for nutritious food during the summer months, when some families may face challenges in providing regular meals that are typically available during the school year.

Families can choose between two options: weekly meal pick-up or daily on-site meals. For weekly pick-up, registered families may select either a three-day or seven-day meal box, depending on their needs. Pick-ups are scheduled every Thursday from May 28 through August 13 at two designated locations. Registration is required for planning purposes, with one form needed per child and selection of specific weeks of participation. There will be no pick-up service on July 2; instead, two-week meal boxes will be distributed on June 25.

Eligibility for meal boxes depends on participation in other programs: children not enrolled in a summer program can receive seven-day boxes, while those attending a Hickory City Schools summer program that provides meals may get three-day boxes during those weeks. When not enrolled in such programs, families can return to receiving seven-day boxes.

For daily meals served onsite, Patrick Beaver Library will provide breakfast every Tuesday morning from June 2 through July 28. Ridgeview Recreation Center will serve meals Monday through Thursday from June 2 through August 13. Meals must be eaten at these locations and there will be no service during the week of July 4.

Children participating in onsite dining are also eligible for a three-day meal box each week; these must be picked up at Henry Fork River Park.

Families interested in participating are encouraged to review all details and complete the registration form provided by Hickory City Schools.
