Frye Regional Medical Center announced on Apr. 9 its first-quarter DAISY Award recipients, recognizing nurses Kimberly Eckard and Matthew Rhyne for their exceptional care and dedication to patients.

The DAISY Award is an international recognition created by the DAISY Foundation to honor nurses who demonstrate compassion and professionalism in their work. The award aims to highlight those who make a significant difference in the lives of patients, families, and colleagues during challenging times.

Kimberly Eckard, a Float Pool RN from Alexander County, was named the February recipient for her leadership and patient-centered approach. A patient praised Eckard for her calm presence and detailed explanations during a difficult hospitalization, noting that she “provided steady support throughout multiple days of testing, IVs, new medications and procedures.” The patient also expressed gratitude for Eckard’s attentiveness and professionalism.

Matthew Rhyne, an RN from Caldwell County, received the March award after being recognized by a patient’s family as a source of comfort during a period of loss. The family shared that Rhyne “brought comfort through his kindness and presence” while supporting them through grief. His ongoing care provided reassurance throughout their stay at Frye Regional Medical Center.

Bridget Denzik, chief nursing officer at Frye Regional Medical Center, said: “Each DAISY nomination tells a meaningful story of compassion, excellence and human connection. Together, these stories reflect the extraordinary care our nurses provide every day and the profound impact they have on patients, families and one another.”

The DAISY Award is presented monthly in front of each nurse’s family and colleagues. Honorees receive a certificate of recognition, a hand-carved sculpture called ‘A Healer’s Touch’ from Zimbabwe’s Shona Tribe, flowers arranged with daisies—and cinnamon rolls to share with their department as well as some to take home.

Frye Regional encourages community members to nominate nurses for future awards by sharing personal experiences through its website.
