Congressman Pat Harrigan of North Carolina’s 10th District voted on April 16 in favor of H. Res. 1156, a resolution that reaffirms House Republican support for the Working Families Tax Cuts and highlights the relief these measures provide to workers, families, and seniors nationwide following Tax Day this week.
The vote is significant as it underscores ongoing debates about tax policy and which groups benefit most from recent legislative changes. The resolution comes at a time when many Americans are filing their taxes and considering the impact of new laws on their finances.
“We passed the Working Families Tax Cuts because working Americans deserved a tax code that actually works for them, and we are not going to apologize for it,” said Congressman Harrigan. “No tax on tips, no tax on overtime, an expanded child tax credit, bigger refunds, bigger paychecks. Every single Democrat voted against all of it. This resolution makes clear whose side Republicans are on, and it is not Washington’s.”
The Working Families Tax Cuts were described as delivering substantial relief: families of four earning under $73,000 generally owe no federal income tax; individuals in the bottom 40 percent will see a 15 percent reduction; seniors can claim a new deduction up to $6,000 per year; nearly 45 percent of returns filed this season have used at least one provision from the law; an estimated $222 billion in refunds have been distributed so far; and an average cut of $3,750 is expected for taxpayers in the upcoming year.
Harrigan reminded constituents that House Republicans delivered these benefits despite unanimous opposition from Democrats in Congress. He said he would continue efforts to protect these provisions moving forward.
In related political developments,Pat Harrigan won reelection in 2024, defeating Ralph R. Scott Jr., with Harrigan receiving approximately 57.5 percent of the vote.
