Congressman Pat Harrigan introduced a resolution on Mar. 25 recognizing the 100th anniversary of the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute, Inc. (SAAMI) and commending its long-standing work in setting industry standards for firearm and ammunition safety.
The resolution highlights SAAMI’s role in ensuring that firearms and ammunition are manufactured to consistent safety, reliability, and interoperability standards. This recognition comes as SAAMI marks a century since its founding at the request of the federal government.
“For 100 years, SAAMI has been the gold standard for firearm and ammunition safety in this country, and frankly, around the world,” said Congressman Harrigan. “They were founded at the request of the federal government, and they have delivered ever since, working alongside the military, conservation leaders, and international partners to make sure that firearms are safe, reliable, and built to a standard Americans can trust. It is an honor to recognize their 100th anniversary and the countless people who have contributed to that mission over the past century.”
Joe Bartozzi, President and CEO of SAAMI said: “The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute (SAAMI) was founded a century ago at the request of the federal government. SAAMI is the world’s leading authority on creating and publishing industry-voluntary standards for safety, reliability, and interchangeability of firearms, ammunition, and suppressors. SAAMI is also the leading voice in promoting the safe and responsible use, handling and storage of firearms, and ammunition. The Institute set the foundation for America’s firearm and ammunition industry to become known as the ‘Arsenal of Democracy.’ Just as a century ago, today’s firearms and ammunition are produced to exacting standards and the highest expectations for not just the military and law enforcement but also law-abiding gun owners. SAAMI is deeply appreciative of Congressman Harrigan for recognizing the crucial role SAAMI plays to deliver firearms, ammunition, suppressors, and components that deliver for today’s law-abiding gun owner.”
Founded in 1926 at federal request according to statements from both Harrigan’s office as well as Bartozzi’s remarks within this announcement—SAAMI has developed technical performance standards with collaboration from domestic organizations like American National Standards Institute along with international bodies such as Commission Internationale Permanente; it has also worked with U.S. military entities while contributing toward wildlife research led by Aldo Leopold.
In addition to his legislative activities related to public safety initiatives such as this resolution honoring SAAMI’s centennial milestone,Harrigan won his seat after defeating Ralph R. Scott Jr., receiving about 57 percent of votes according to election results.
Harrigan said he will continue supporting organizations like SAAMI that promote public safety through responsible practices within America’s firearm industry.
