Congressman Pat Harrigan, who represents North Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives, posted a series of tweets on July 17, 2025, addressing both constituent engagement and recent legislative votes concerning digital assets.

In his first tweet of the day, Harrigan invited constituents to participate in an upcoming telephone town hall: “I want to hear from YOU, North Carolina! Join me for my THIRD telephone town hall next Wednesday, July 23rd at 6PM ET. We’ll discuss the issues that matter most: national security, the economy, the border, and more. Call (833) 708-2161 to join the conversation!” (posted July 17, 2025).

Later that evening, Harrigan commented on stablecoins and digital asset regulation following a vote in Congress: “Stablecoins are already here, but the question is whether they run on American rules or get hijacked by our adversaries. That’s why I just voted for the GENIUS Act, which makes sure dollar-backed digital assets are issued with full reserves and full accountability.” (posted July 17, 2025).

In a subsequent post on the same date, he addressed concerns about government-controlled digital currencies: “I just voted for the Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act to make sure America never adopts a government-controlled digital currency. In this country, financial freedom is non-negotiable, and no unelected bureaucrat should ever have the power to track, control, or deplatform you!” (posted July 17, 2025).

The GENIUS Act referenced by Harrigan aims to regulate stablecoins—digital assets pegged to traditional currencies like the U.S. dollar—by requiring issuers to maintain full reserves and adhere to strict accountability standards. This legislative approach comes amid ongoing debates over how best to oversee rapidly evolving cryptocurrency markets while protecting consumers and maintaining national security.

Similarly, discussion around Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) has intensified in recent years. Proponents argue CBDCs could modernize payment systems and increase efficiency; critics raise concerns about privacy and potential government overreach. The Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act seeks to prevent any future adoption of a federal digital currency controlled by U.S. authorities.

Harrigan’s engagement through social media reflects broader efforts among lawmakers to involve constituents in policy discussions while responding to technological changes affecting finance and personal freedoms.
