Congressman Pat Harrigan, who won the 2024 general election against Ralph R. Scott, Jr. with 57.5% of the vote, posted a series of statements on October 1, 2025, criticizing Democratic leadership and recent actions in higher education.
In a post made at 14:24 UTC on October 1, Harrigan addressed the ongoing government funding dispute by stating: “Welcome to the Schumer shutdown, where Democrats suddenly oppose what they supported 13 times because the radical left demands destruction over governance. They’re throwing their peas and carrots on the floor from a high chair while the American people suffer.”
Later that day at 15:49 UTC, Harrigan commented on disciplinary action taken by the University of North Carolina (UNC) regarding a faculty member’s conduct: “.@UNC did the right thing placing this professor on leave. You can’t have someone in a classroom advocating armed political violence with a far-left gun club. Harvard gave him a platform to preach this revolutionary garbage, then deleted the video when reporters came asking”.
At 16:11 UTC, Harrigan returned to his criticism of Democratic policy priorities and spending practices: “Democrats claim to represent ‘all Americans,’ but that comes with an asterisk. They’re demanding benefits for illegal aliens while American families are left to struggle under reckless spending. The choice is clear: a Clean CR or a Schumer Shutdown.”
The term “Schumer shutdown” used by Harrigan refers to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and reflects Republican criticism of Democratic negotiation strategies during federal budget disputes.
Pat Harrigan’s recent posts come less than a year after he secured his seat in Congress by defeating Ralph R. Scott, Jr., earning over half of all votes cast in his district in November 2024.
