Caldwell County Animal Care Enforcement announced on Apr. 23 the installation of public microchip scanning stations at several locations throughout the county to help return lost pets to their owners. The new stations are available for anyone who finds a stray animal and needs to check quickly for a registered microchip.

The microchip scanning stations have been placed at Caldwell County Animal Care and Enforcement, Lenoir Police Department, Hudson Police Department, and Granite Falls Fire Department. Community members who find stray animals are encouraged to contact the shelter at (828) 572-4535 to schedule a surrender appointment. Those who choose to care temporarily for found animals should notify Animal Care promptly so staff can document the animal in the county’s lost and found system and assist if an owner makes an inquiry.

This initiative is funded through a donation from Deb Hall, which supports ongoing efforts to keep pets safe and reunite families with their animals. The addition of these scanning stations aims to streamline the process of identifying lost pets and returning them more efficiently.

In other community news, recent data show that among Caldwell County school districts in the 2022-23 school year, only 17.9% of senior students (132 out of 739) taking the science portion of the ACT were considered ready for college according to North Carolina’s Department of Public Instruction. For junior students, this figure was slightly higher at 19.6% (153 out of 781). In reading, readiness rates were higher: 29.2% (216 seniors) and 25.6% (200 juniors) were deemed college-ready on that section according to North Carolina’s Department of Public Instruction. Math scores showed lower readiness rates with only 14.5% (107 seniors) and 15.4% (120 juniors) meeting college-ready benchmarks as reported by North Carolina’s Department of Public Instruction.
