The Burke County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on April 20 to discuss a proposed amendment to the county’s zoning ordinance. The meeting is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., or as soon as public comments can be heard, in the Commissioners’ Meeting Room at the Burke Services Building in Morganton.

The hearing will address Zoning Text Amendment ZTA 2026-01, which was initiated by Burke County Community Development. The proposed amendment seeks to revise Article 8 of the Burke County Zoning Ordinance, specifically changing the structure, terms, and duties of both the Board of Adjustment and Planning Board.

This matter is significant because changes to these boards could affect how land use decisions are made in Burke County. The structure and responsibilities of these boards play an important role in reviewing development proposals and making recommendations on planning matters.

Residents who have questions about the proposal are encouraged to contact the Community Development Department at 828-764-9030. Anyone needing reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) should reach out to the County Manager’s office by April 17 at 828-764-9350.

The outcome of this hearing may influence future planning and zoning decisions within Burke County.
